Former Latino State Senator Held at Gunpoint for Honking at Undercover Officer

Thank you David Edwards

Armando Ruiz

Former Arizona state senator explained this week how a police officer threatened to kill him after he honked at an unmarked van to avoid a traffic accident.

Armando Ruiz was on his way to church with fellow churchgoer Monica Rivera when 51-year-old police officer Jeremy Sweet cut him off in the unmarked van.

Ruiz, who spent nine years in the state House and one year in the state Senate, said he honked and swerved to avoid a collision. Officer Sweet slowed down to about 10 mph, allowing Ruiz to pass. “That’s when the officer tried to ‘ram’ me”.

Officer Sweet eventually pulled around Ruiz, and forced him to stop. Ruiz then saw Sweet pointing a handgun at them through the passenger-side window of the van.

“As I turned around and I looked at him, I just saw that gun with his arm sticking right at us, I looked at the gun, I looked at the edge, the barrel of it. And in my mind, I said, ‘This is an officer’s weapon.’ And then I looked up his arm and I saw the city of Phoenix police patch. And I said, ‘This is a police officer.’ And I could see the glare of his badge.”

“He was just looking for any flinch on my part, any flinch on Monica’s part, any reason to shoot us”.

Monica Rivera said the only thing she could remember was that Sweet “put his finger on the trigger. And that’s why I started crying,” .

For two minutes, Ruiz said that Sweet trained the handgun at them and never identified himself as an officer.

“I just sat there and put my hands up — and just angry, he just had that angry look on his face,” Ruiz said.

Sweet finally drove off, after telling him to “be careful who you honk at the next time.”

Ruiz wrote down the license plate number, and called 911. The officer was later identified as a Phoenix police officer. Officer Jeremy Sweet was arrested and held on one count of aggravated assault.

      • I totally agree that had the man not been a former Senator, any complaint would have been filed in a black-hole and the man maliciously harassed. That video caused me to shiver.
